About Mauria
Hello! My name is Mauria Smith, and I am the owner of Schmelly Dog Grooming Spa! I am 39 years old, and live and work out of my home here in Plainfield, Indiana, and have a husband, two kiddos, and 2 beagles. Starting at a very young age of 4...I have been OBSESSED with dogs. You know when your friends want to play house, and always someone would yell "I wanna be the Mom! or I wanna be the sister!"...I would yell "I wanna be the dog!" Looking back, I can see that's where it all started! After high school, and having miscellaneous jobs, I took a job at a doggy daycare shortly after I was married. It was the best job! I got to play with dogs, and learn more about animal communication and behavior. My favorite kind of dogs were the scared ones. I loved being the one to help them feel comfortable and know that daycare was a fun place to be, and watch them open up, build confidence and start playing with other dogs. After working at the doggy daycare for a little over 11 years, I decided it was time for a new challenge, and a new way to connect with the dogs. So, I went to Animal Arts Academy in Carmel, and got certified to be a dog groomer. It was scary, and exciting. I started working in a busy shop, and realized that I am not cut out for that kind of environment of trying to get as many dogs in and as many dogs groomed as possible. My breaks were spent crying because of not even knowing who the dog was that I was working on, and I knew this wasn't the place for me. So, I moved on, and went to a groomer where it was by appointment only, and very stress free. I knew this was the way grooming needed to be. So, Schmelly Dog Grooming Spa was born! You may be asking yourself....but why the name "Schmelly Dog"? Well, I'm a huge FRIENDS fan, and love Phoebe Buffay's "Smelly Cat" song, and my best friend Anna, has a dog named Ellie, who we call Schmelly or Schmells. I've been in business for almost 2 years now, and I've loved every second. I get to know each dog that comes to me, and help them to realize that grooming can be a calming and fun experience. In my spare time with grooming, I help local rescues with their dogs that are looking for homes. Check out Creekside Animal Rescue and Every Dog Counts Rescue for more information.
